Research Title:

Microbial dynamics under heat stress

Research Content/Goal:

The aim of this research is the in depth study of the microbial stress adaptation and the construction of a predictive model which will include the microbial dynamics in response to stress. The micro-organism chosen for the purposes of this research is E.coli K12 MG1655. The resistance of E. coli to heat after pre-exposure to various time-temperature and various initial pH values of the growth medium is being investigated. Furthermore (a) biomarker(s) related with thermotolerance will be selected, identified and qualified. Finally, the collected experimental data related with microbial and biomarker(s) dynamics in responce to stress conditions will be incorporated in advanced, white box predictive models.

Newsflash

Two OPTEC professors have been awarded three "Gouden Krijtjes", the yearly teaching awards given by the organization of engineering students (vtk). Prof. Lombaert was awarded the prize for the best course in civil engineering, and Prof. Diehl the prizes for the best professor and the best course in mathematical engineering (where he teaches numerical optimization). They received these awards at the yearly "proffentap" where experienced students taught them how to draft beer professionally.
