Industrial biotechnology can be regarded as one of the key technologies supporting the future development of a sustainable society. Despite the intrinsic sustainability of these bio-based processes, their yield (efficiency) is relatively low when compared to purely chemical production. Therefore, this project concentrates on yield optimization through advanced monitoring, control and optimization approaches exploiting microscopic knowledge. The major challenge is to incorporate microscopic models that are currently being developed for metabolic engineering purposes with macroscopic models that are adequate for process engineering.
