General information
The Paus Adriaan VI-College (Pauscollege / Pope's College) has a long tradition in housing University students. Founded in 1523 by testament of Pope Hadrian VI, the College has been home to innumerable students over the centuries, with only a few exceptions in revolutionary times and during the two World Wars. The building is a listed monument and dates from the latter part of the 18th Century. Unlike the well-known Colleges at Cambridge or Oxford, the Popeís College is a dorm and not a place of academic teaching. The College is owned by the City of Leuven, but leased to the University. In coming years, major maintenance work and renovation is planned. In total 180 students stay in the College for the two semesters of an Academic Year.
The Popeís College is situated in the centre of the City of Leuven, near the collegial church of St Peter and the famous Town Hall. The railway station is about 1 km or 10í by foot. The city campus of the University consits mainly of faculties of the humanities group (law, economics, arts, psychology, theology). The campusses of sciences and medicine can easily be reached by bicycle or bus (university students recieve a free bus-pass upon enrollment).
The College rents out rooms in different categories. Almost sixty rooms have a private shower, with hot and cold warer; about fifty rooms are doubles (seperate bedroom), fifty are singles, all with cold water: twenty rooms are in the attick, with warm and cold water, but no private shower. The rent for these different categories is variable.
Rooms are for rent on a full board basis. Breakfast is provided from Monday trough Friday, and supper from Monday trough Thursday. All meals are served in the Mensa of our College. It is not possible to opt out of this full board service. Meal-tickets are provided on a weekly basis. The restaurant is closed on the week-end, when most Belgian students leave the city of Leuven. Full board is provided during the 13 weeks of the winter or spring semester on schooldays (not on public holidays: e.g. 1 November, 1 May).
All extra costs are included in the rent. There are no extra charges for electricity, water, heating, city taxes, ... Every dormroom is connected to the Internet. Students must discharge waste on a selective basis (paper, plastic /drink cartons and tins, glas and restfraction) and are expected to contribute in the logistics of the disposal of all waste.
All rooms of the College have basic furniture, e.g. bed plus matras, desk and wardrobe. We do not provide bedlinen and/or towels. For Erasmus-program students who stay for a single semester, it is possible that some personal belongings have been left behind by your predecessor (e.g. fridge, wall posters, settee Ö); we expect that you respect these items.
Rooms are rented out on basis of availability. This means that new students fill in the vacancies that are left at the end of the academic year, taking account of the preferences expressed and the date of registration. For students who only stay for one semester, only the rooms vacated for the one semester are available.
180 students studying and living together in a relatively small space, requires respect for colleagues; parties, loud music etc. are not allowed on your room. Repeated infractions upon these rules can lead to dismissal.
Your room is cleaned on a regular basis, but you are responsable to keep it in good order and maintained.
Rent is payable in three installments, preferably into the bankaccount of the College, details of which are provided in the lease-agreement.
The presidium of students organises a host of activities, including sports competitions (football, basket), the (in)famous 24-hours run, video-nights, cantusses (traditional singing and beer drinking). The College is proud of its in-house bar and common room; the highlights are international football matches with Belgian participation (and more recently also tennis). Other activities are also organised, especially during the first weeks of the winter semester. The College chapel doubles as a music-room. Serious students of music can apply for a personal key.
The College is closed on weeknights by 11.30 PM, during the weekends and holiday periods possibly earlier. Each students recieves a key to enter the College by the night-entrance. For your own safety, it is important to make sure this door remains closed. The College provides a permanency service by the four subregents. Our in house janitor can take care of allmost all small inconveniencies. The President of the College, the director and bursar are responsable for the running of the college.
