This research describes mechanisms to improve the support for the early design stages in software for architectural design. The focus lies on the transition of the design between different design phases and scale levels.
The research initiates with an overview of design applications, mostly in the context of Computer Aided Design and 3D modeling. From this overview, several trends and limitations are derived. In addition, the problems surrounding the exchange of design data are discussed. This overview leads to the elaboration and implementation of a custom data structure to describe a digital building model. This is a flexible and generic structure, supporting the transitions between design phases and scale levels. This is applied in a prototype application, to illustrate some of the proposed mechanisms for improvement.
