Designing welfare. A study of public and collective spaces in Flanders (1958-1978).

The economic growth of sixties and seventies gave rise to better housing conditions, but also to an increasing amount of social amenities. Governmental bodies and socio-cultural organizations built cultural centres, sport centres, libraries, holiday centres and recreational domains. The project will study the goals, development and impact of these new social amenities, from a perspective that links architectural and socio-historical analyses. We will apply an interdisciplinary method that combines the study of archival materials and other historical sources with fieldwork and oral history. The empirical research comprises an architectural analysis of buildings and landscapes in their spatial context as well as in-depth interviews with privileged witnesses.
