Research project

Person in charge of the project:
STEENBERGHEN THÉRÈSE, member of research team Department of Architecture, Urban Design and Regional Planning
Title:
Steunpunt Ruimte en Wonen.
Project summary:
The Policy Research Centre Spatial Planning and Housing (acronym SRW) is set up as a policy support centre by the Flemish Regional Government. The aim of SRW is to understand what spatial and housing transformations are taking place in Flanders and why and how these are happening. SRW works for and in close cooperation with the Flemish Government of Spatial Planning and Housing policy.
The Space Monitor is developed by SADL, the Spatial Applications Division of the K.U.Leuven. This monitoring system consists of policy relevant indicators of land use in Flanders from past to present. The instrument is based on GIS technology and provides insight in spatial characteristics of land use, and in the related activities and processes, including their intensity and their spatial dynamics.
Key issues in the development of the system are:
* integration of multidisciplinary research findings
* analysis of spatial dynamics
* implementation of INSPIRE principles for sharing spatial information
* using open source for web mapping services
