Integrating the Universal Design into Flanders' architectural education.
|
In 2001 the Council of Europe adopted a resolution that encourages all member states to promote the principles of Universal Design, a.o. in architectural and design education. Universal Design (Design for All) is a relatively new design approach which aims at integral and inclusive design for all, inclusing persons with permanent, temporary or situational limitations. Inspired by this resolution, teachers from three Flemish architecture schools (Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg, Hogeschool Antwerpen, Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst) introduced the principles of Universal Design in their theoretical courses and practical exercises. After this successful pioneer work, the time has come to mainstream Universal Design, i.e. to integrate it in a structural and sustainable way in all Flemish architecture programs. Meanwhile several initiatives have been taken to structurally integrate Universal Design in architecture and other programs abroad. In order to avoid reinventing the wheel, the project aims to analyse these initiatives in depth, and to confront them with the situation of the Flemish architecture programs, each with their specific nature. The project is supported by Equal Opportunities in Flanders.
