Title:
The Manueline vaults of João de Castilho – History and Conservation
Les voûtes manuélines de João de Castilho - Histoire et Conservation (dissertation language: French)
Project summary:
The Manueline vaults, particularly João de Castilho’s, are an exemplary Portuguese architectural style on the European level dating from the end of the fifteenth and beginning of the sixteenth century. Our goal is to achieve a multidisciplinary study (analysis of historical, architectural, constructive and conservation data), with a broad understanding of this particular and innovative art.
The objectives of the research are: 1. Make an inventory of different types of Manueline vaults; 2. Compare them to European vaults, especially in Spain, England and Germany; 3. Check the actual questions related to the dating and attribution of João de Castilho’s vaults; 4. Study its constructive aspects, including the details and construction techniques; 5. Analyze their architecture (shape, proportions, geometry, design); 6. Analyze their state of conservation concerning structural disorders, including their evolution in time.
