The eyes of the mind. Architecture and mental disability.
|
Designers have a significant impact on our life. The role of architecture is not limited to the creation of a certain environment, this environment can also strongly influence the way we use it. The organisation and the design of spaces can open up or restrict certain patterns of use. Dependent on the possibilities or limits of a specific user, his or her experience of the environment will change. Not only a difference in physical abilities may change this experience, also a different mental attitude can influence the interpretation of the space. Starting from these observations, this research intends to gain insight into the way the human mind – in all its various appearances – handles the environment, so that designers can take this into account while designing. The research involves a profound analysis of the real patterns of use in the built environment considering an “other” mental disposition, in particular the one of people with a mental disability. The main questions explore how people with a specific mental attitude mould the environment to their will, which aspects of the environment play a role in this, and what the implications are for designing architecture.
