Doctoral research project

Person in charge of the project:
MERTENS ROBERT PIERRE, member of research team Associated Section of ESAT - INSYS, Integrated Systems
Title:
Passsivated emitter and rear solar cells on ultra-thin substrates.
Project summary:
The aim of this PhD is the scientific study of the impact of a laser doping process to create a highly doped region at the back side of the solar cell, to act as a back surface field (BSF), by means of boron rich layers spun on the Si wafer, and the following metallization on solar cell performance, understanding the contact formation. For that, a series of test vehicles will be used, e.g., sheet resistance measurements, secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) or Scanning Spreading Resistance Microscopy (SSRM) in order to determine the characteristics of the layer, such as total doping concentration, depth and surface concentration. New metallization layers will be studied along with different conditions of the laser parameters to define the diffused layer.
