Title:
Territorialiteit en complexiteit in t.o.v. steden "perifeer" gelegen gebieden. Het doorbreken van het urbano-centrisch paradigma.
Project summary:
This research looks into the origins, function and dynamics of regional urban centres in Antiquity, taking its lead from the ancient Pisidian city of Sagalassos. Of crucial importance in this discussion is the exploitation territory of a city since a city was - in first instance - dependent on it for its survival. Sources for this research are twofold. First, the cental ques- tions relating to the case of Sagalassos and its exploitation territory will be framed into the general models concerning the origins and development of complex systems, in casu regional urban centres and their exploitation territories. Secondly, intensive archaeological surveys are undertaken in close proxi- mity to the city, in order to assess the possibilities of the city's exploitation territory and the changes it underwent through time.
