Research project

Person in charge of the project:
BREMS HUGO, member of research team Literary Studies: Dutch Literature
Title:
'Adventure' in Middle Dutch literature. An enquiry into the cultural-historical, narrative and interpretative aspects of a concept.
Project summary:
Chivalrous epic and romance is riddled with various kinds of supernatural elements: the marvellous, the miraculous, and the magical. The central question in this research project is: what is the function of the supernatural in these texts and is there a detectable development of this function (correlated to geogra- phical and historical location). The primary emphasis is on an analysis of supernatural motives in Middle Dutch chivalrous epic and romance; secondary aims include establishing a more refined definition of the supernatural as a medieval literary phenomenon and investigating possible reciprocal influence vis-à-vis other genres (religious literature and artes-literature).
