Winckelmann and his classical ideal. The development of art theory in the late eighteenth century.
|
|
Eighteenth century classicist theoreticians explicitly summoned for a modern interpretation of antique forms. But was their ap- peal acknowledge? The confrontation of the theoretical discourse with the contemporary art practice, is a challenge for the pre- sent research. Exemplary is the reception of Johann Joachim Winckelmaan's (1717-1768) ideas by classicist artists. A rather philosophical approach will prove to be inevitable. However, such considerations require a scrutiny of the existing sources. From an aesthetical point of view our attention concerns the intrinsic evolution of the late eighteenth century theoretical discourse. Fram a historical point of view we must consider to which extent the development of classicist aesthetics can be demonstrated by theoretical writings, critiques and of course the works of art themselves.
