Title:
Integrated language-and-culture learning. Dual and single learning tasks compared.
Project summary:
This research aims to shed light on whether or not dual tasks that aim to extend students'vocabulary as well as enhance their familiarity with the cultural context in which the language they are learning is used, lead to better or lesser learning effects than single tasks, which either strive to enlarge learners' voca- bulary or extend their familiarity with the foreign culture. The empirical data that will be collected by means of an experi- mental research design amongst advanced adult learners of Dutch as a Second language will yield information. 1. Regarding the differences in learning effect between single and dual tasks. 2. Regarding optimum learning tasks for integrated language-and- culture learning. 3. Which can substantiate the discussion regar- ding the most optimum cognitive theoretical model for explaining foreign language acquisition processes, namely the competition model or the cognition model.
