The character of myths. An enquiry into the literary relations between Flanders and the Netherlands (1980-1994).

This research project aims to map the literary relations between Flanders and the Netherlands between 1980 and 1995. In an article from 1999 Hugo Brems points out that this time period has been of some importance for the literary development in Flanders: “the choice of this time period has to do with the commonly phrased notion that Flemish literature has been undervalued [by the Dutch literary critics] in the first half of the 1980s. This situation has changed for the better; a change that we should also be able to note in a significant increase in the number of Flemish authors publishing with a Dutch literary publisher. The 1990s, then, should show a more balanced situation”. Focusing on Flemish literary criticism, with an analysis of the changes in literary criticism – both quantitative and qualitative – and a survey of the developments in literary publishing, literary historiography and the literary magazines, this research project will establish the changing perspective that Flemish literature seems to be taking on its Dutch neighbour.
