Resonances of Surrealism and the Pictorial: Photography as Art in Belgium (1960s-80s).
|
|
This research concentrates on the process in which the medium photography enters the domain of the visual arts in Belgium. The central question is: which Belgian artists during the 1960s, '70s and '80s used photography as an artistic medium, and in which exhibitions and publications this work was shown? In conformity with the international scene, the use of photography in the 1960s-70s appears to display itself mainly within the context of conceptual art, while in the 1980s the photograph is considered as a tableau with pictorial characteristics. The studied oeuvres are those of, among others, Jes Geys, Marcel Broodthaers, Jacques Charlier, Jacques Lennep, Jacques Louis Nyst, Jacques Lizène, Philippe Van Snick, Danny Matthys, Jan Vercruysse, Dirk Braeckman and Ria Pacquée. Through the analysis of their work it is shown how they link up with or deviate from the international artistic tendencies. As a specificity for this corpus of "Belgian photo work" the hypothesis of a strong influence from Surrealism and the pictorial tradition is introduced as a hypothesis.
