A fundamental analysis of the evolution of auction prices of paintings of the seventheenth century North- and South-Netherlands paintings (1670-1998).

We dispose already of a database of about 60.000 auction prices concerning the paintings of a group of 68 selected 17th century painters, whose works were traded intensively enough to give us a fairly accurate idea of the evolution of their value. This database is subdivided in two groups: the works sold in the period 1642-1914 and those sold between 1961 and 1998. The auction prices from the 1st period are expressed in terms of gold parity, and those of the 2nd period in French francs of 1998. The gold parities can be compared with real values such as wages and the stock prices. This procures us a fairly accurate and therefore acceptable idea of the price evolution of the 17th century paintings as such. It is furthermore possible to refine the global price evolution by subdividing it in terms of iconographic subjects. This gives us an idea of the evolution of the public's preferences.
