Towards a theorization of the political in post-TRC South African art, from the point of view of the engagement of the artist.
|
|
This research intends to determine whether an examination of the work produced in the aftermath of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) can provide a basis for the theorization of intellectual responsibility in political art. It is an examination of the engagement of South African artists with the evidence of state violence. By isolating and examining three modes of engagement - the empathetic, the vicarious and the confessional - the research intends to zxamine how artists have positioned themselves and their work to the exposures of the TRC. Allied to this analytical study outlined above there will, simultaneously, be a more performative form of research occurring in the drawing and filming that are at the heart of this project. Issues of intellactual responsibility, the ethics of empathy and of constructing memory of past events, are issues that are constantly being thought through in the process of drawing and filming.
