Research project

Person in charge of the project:
DE SMEDT MARCEL, member of research team Literary Studies: Dutch Literature
Title:
The historical novel in Flanders (1851-1893). A poetical, chronotopical and narratological research into the development of a genre.
Project summary:
The research project offers a continuation of the genre study which Bemong presented in her PhD, and which dealt with the Belgian historical novel in the first half of the 19th century. Now the diachronic evolution of the genre is studied for the period 1851-1893. The central focus lies on the mutual interaction of the three dimensions that Fokkema distinguishes in the study of literary codes. The pragmatic dimension of the project (which largely corresponds to the study of the poetics of the genre) deals with the question in what circumstances novelists opt for specific syntactic or semantic constructions; here, the theoretical approach is a polysystemic one. In the textual analytical component of the project, the syntactic and semantic dimensions are further investigated in a number of case studies, which are all constructed around clusters of historical novels. These case studies present narratological-chronotopical analyses of the texts.
