Rethinking the Past: Henri Leys' History Painting and the Origins of the Avant-garde.

This research project investigates the significance of the oeuvre and of the artistic legacy of the Belgian painter Henri Leys (1815-1869). Its primary goal is to re-examine and reassess the precise nature and originality of Leys’ contribution to nineteenth-century history and historical genre painting. The research project’s basic assumption is that Leys was not a conventional, academic painter of historical scenes, but that he tried structurally to modernise history and historical genre painting. To that purpose, his work introduced a number of pre-eminently and deliberately modern strategies: a multifarious game with formats, genres, historical styles, compositional schemes and visual quotes—all nurtured by a complex, emulative dialogue with both the art of the Old Masters and contemporary developments of modern visual media and technologies.
