Doctoral research project

Person in charge of the project:
BREMS HUGO, member of research team Literary Studies: Dutch Literature
Title:
K. Schippers and negative space.
Project summary:
In the context of the (minimalistic) visual arts and architecture, the concept of 'negative space' designates the empty space that surrounds and invades the (artistic) object, but nevertheless affects the layers of signification of the piece. This research investigates the relevance of such a concept for the prose (short stories and novels) and art criticism (essays) of K. Schippers. Within the totality of Schippers' oeuvre the notion of 'surrounding space' - also the invisible, absent, interspace of blind spot - prevails within the texts (as a recurring motif and theme), but also operates on the poetical level of the work. The research of this twofold significance finally invokes a third, theoretical reflection on the negative space surrounding Schippers' own work, as it is outlined by such motifs as the 'loss of language'.
