Title:
Fashion Photography as Contemporary Art?: A Critical Analysis of Parallel and Distinct Aspects of Form and Theory
Project summary:
This dissertation will investigate and address the contemporary intersection of art and fashion photography (as exemplified by major art institutions staging exhibitions on fashion photography, and by artists being hired for fashion campaigns). The research will primarily focus on examples of fashion photography founded on a conceptual basis and formal rigor typically associated with the 'fine arts'. Contemporary art practices that draw on a formal inheritance from the language of fashion photography will also be investigated. The manner in which concepts such as content, intent, and spectatorship are addressed or elided by the institutional reframing of fashion photography are of interest. Furthermore, issues inherent to the structure of fashion photography, typically those associatad with a broader notion of authorship and with the commercial imperatives of advertising and consumtion, will play a part in the analysis.
