Aspects of the 'Monstertrilogie' and other works of Tom Lanoye.

The study focuses, by means of several readings, on the most central aspects and fields of tension in Tom Lanoye's ‘Monstertrilogie’, consisting of Het goddelijke monster, Zwarte tranen and Boze tongen. Starting from a referential reading, the ambivalent relation between fact and fiction, between the literary text and the extra-literary reality is examined. With that the key concept is the ‘roman é clef’. The apparent breach in the trilogy between realistic and fantastic writing can, however, not be explained from a referential point of view. Therefore, in a second part, we subject the trilogy to readings proceeding from intertexts. The intertexts, of which some of them are derived from work of others (Shakespeare, Walschap, Claus, Kantorowicz, Girard, …) and some are taken from Lanoye's own oeuvre (Mamma Medea, Ten oorlog, Celibaat, Atropa, …), bring forward important themes and strategies. This research hopes to make a contribution to the study of the ‘Monstertrilogie’ and, by extension, Lanoye’s complete oeuvre and poetics.
