Regular students

Students

are mainly referred to the private housing market for permanent accommodation but they can also apply for a KU Leuven non-subsidized residence since 20% of all available non-subsidized rooms owned by the KU Leuven are reserved for international students.  A small number of KU Leuven rooms is reserved in subsidized university residences for international students.

The offer on the private housing market can be consulted as from the 1st of June on www.kotwijs.be.

Regular students staying for a short period (less than an academic year) need to log in on Kotwijs with their guest account number to view the short term offer (subletting by students or short term rent by landlords).

In the beginning of the rental season (during the month of June and the beginning of July) the offer will be the biggest.

It is not obvious to rent a room from abroad. Because of the wide variety in prices, comfort, surface area etc., it is very risky to make a choice from abroad, without having viewed at least a few rental units personally. As most private landlords use a contract in Dutch, it is very important to understand the contract before signing it. According to Belgian law, a contract once signed, cannot be terminated before it expires. Moreover, most landlords prefer to rent to students they have met personally.

Therefor it is recommended to visit Leuven to find accommodation. Since the supply of housing tends to shorten quite quick, it is advisable to visit Leuven some time before the start of academic year (academic calendar 2012-2013).

Guesthousing

If no permanent housing has been arranged before departure to Leuven, it is necessary to arrange guesthousing for about one week.

Once in Leuven and settled in a temporary guestroom, students should go immediately to the Housing Service where they will be given information and guided through the procedure to find permanent housing.

Most students will find their new home in Leuven within about a week.

Couples and families

Regular students who intend to bring their families are strongly advised to come by themselves at first.
In Leuven, it is very difficult to house families in guestrooms and it can take some time before suitable family houses or family apartments are found.

Assistance with all student housing issues is provided by the University Housing Service.
