Visiting scholars
The K.U. Leuven has a limited number of properties available for rent to members of the university and visiting scholars. One of these properties is the Groot Begijnhof University Residential Area, located at the edge of the city of Leuven.
It is the policy of the Groot Begijnhof to offer accommodation to visiting professors and international scholars for a maximum period of one year. Short term lets (three months or less) are also considered. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances and on condition that accommodation is available.
Please, contact Ms Leen Bogaert (grootbegijnhof@kuleuven.be) to apply for suitable accommodation at the University Residential Area Groot Begijnhof.
Since there is no balance between demand and supply, accommodation must be requested at least three months in advance.
If the residential area of the Groot Begijnhof is fully booked, visiting scholars who stay in Leuven for a short-term programme (3 months at most) are referred to the private housing market.
A small number of students are eligible for a room in subsidized university residence halls.
Before Arrival
Before departure to Leuven it is necessary to arrange guesthousing for a few nights since it is not possible to move into a permanent room immediately.
Couples and families
Visiting scholars who intend to bring their families are strongly advised to come by themselves at first. In Leuven, it is very difficult to house families in a guestroom and it can take some time before suitable family houses or family apartments are found.
Upon Arrival
Once in Leuven, visiting scholars must come to the Housing Service where they will be given information and guided through the procedure to find permanent housing.
They will receive a list of rooms/studios from private landlords who are prepared to rent for a shorter rental period. Generally these rooms and studios are more expensive than those which are rented for a full academic year.
As we strongly advise against renting from abroad, it is not possible to apply for these lists from abroad.
