Sigrid Müller is currently Head of the Department of Moral Theology at the University of Vienna. She studied Theology, Latin and Italian at the Eberhard-Karls-University of Tübingen and at the Pontifical University Gregoriana in Rome. She also holds a Master’s degree in Family Counselling from the Catholic University of Salamanca.

Before receiving her doctorate in Theology at Tübingen in 1998, she taught Ethics and Religion at St John’s College, Cambridge. Her postdoctoral research brought her to the University of Nijmegen and to Vienna, where she was awarded a Hertha Firnberg research fellowship. In 2006 she received her habilitation from the University of Tübingen. In 2007, she was appointed professor of Moral Theology at the Catholic Faculty of Vienna.

Her special research interests are the history of moral theology and bioethics, with a focus on the ethics of technology. She is engaged in building up a network of bio-ethicists in Central Europe. At her Faculty, she is collaborating in a research group on “Theology, Ethics, and Sciences in Society”. She also teaches at the University Institute for Ethics and Law in Medicine.

In 2008, she was appointed a Junior Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Curatorial Board of the Austrian Science Fund FWF. She has been elected a member of the Editorial Board of ET Studies.

She is the author of Handeln in einer kontingenten Welt. Zu Begriff und Bedeutung der recta ratio bei Wilhelm von Ockham (Acting in a Contigent World. On the Concept and Significance of the recta ratio in William of Ockham) and (together with V. Leppin) Wilhelm von Ockham. Texte zu Theologie und Ethik. Lateinisch/deutsch (Reclam, 2000). Her book on the impact of the late medieval establishment of philosophical schools on the shaping of moral theological thought in the fifteenth century is scheduled to be published in 2010. She is co-editor of Naturalisierung des Geistes? Beiträge zur gegenwärtigen Debatte um den Geist (Naturalising the Spirit? Contributions to the Current Debate on the Spirit) (Königshausen und Neumann, 2008), and has been published in international journals.

Sigrid Müller ist Vorständin des Instituts für Moraltheologie an der Universität Wien. Ihre weitere wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit führte sie anschließend an die Universität Nimwegen und schließlich nach Wien, wo sie ein Hertha-Firnberg-Forschungsprojekt leitete. 2006 wurde sie an der Universität Tübingen habilitiert und 2007 als Professorin für Moraltheologie an die Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät in Wien berufen.

Ihre speziellen Forschungsinteressen umfassen die Geschichte der Moraltheologie sowie Bioethik mit besonderem Schwerpunkt Technologieethik. Sie ist Mitbegründerin eines Netzwerks von BioethikerInnen in Mitteleuropa. An ihrer Fakultät wirkt sie am Forschungsschwerpunkt THESIS („Theology, Ethics ans Sciences in Society“) mit. Außerdem lehrt sie am Universitätsinstitut für „Ethik und Recht in der Medizin“.

Im Jahr 2008 wurde Sigrid Müller zum Mitglied der Jungen Kurie der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften bestellt sowie in den Kuratoriumsausschuss des Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF berufen. Seit 2009 ist sie Mitglied des Herausgeberteams der „ET Studies“.

Sie ist Autorin von „Handeln in einer kontingenten Welt. Zu Begriff und Bedeutung der recta ratio bei Wilhelm von Ockham“ (A. Francke 2000) und (gemeinsam mit V. Leppin) „Wilhelm von Ockham. Texte zu Theologie und Ethik. Lateinisch/Deutsch“ (Reclam 2000). Die Veröffentlichung ihres Buches über die Bedeutung der Gründung philosophischer Schulen im Spätmittelalter für die Entwicklung moraltheologischer Modelle im 15. Jahrhundert ist für 2010 geplant. Sie ist Mitherausgeberin von „Naturalisierung des Geistes? Beiträge zur gegenwärtigen Debatte um den Geist“ (Königshausen und Neumann 2008) und hat in internationalen Zeitschriften publiziert.

Projet de recherche : Les synodes comme structure participative dans l’Église catholique. Perspectives théologiques, juridiques et socio-anthropologiques.

Résumé du projet : La recherche sur les synodes dans les Églises locales permet de comprendre les modes d’action de l’Église catholique dans des contextes particuliers. Parmi les modes de résolution possibles des défis contemporains, la structure participative dite “synodale” est souvent présentée comme la plus optimale. Il s’agit de vérifier cette affirmation par une étude novatrice empirique et interdisciplinaire (théologie, droit des institutions, sociologie), et de développer une grille d’évaluation de ces pratiques. Le but poursuivi est d’analyser certains fonctionnements dans le contexte catholique francophone [sans exclusive, en fonction du profil du chercheur], en vue d’une efficacité répondant aux conditions de la société actuelle en terme d’organisation institutionnelle.

Qualifications et qualités souhaitées (en italique = obligatoire):
- Être titulaire d’un diplôme de master (maîtrise) [ou DEA] en théologie reconnu par l’Université et obtenu avec mention [au plus tard en juin 2009].
- Une formation en socio-anthropologie constituerait un atout supplémentaire.
- Être déjà orienté(e) vers une spécialisation en théologie pratique et en particulier être intéressé(e) par les questions touchant à l’ecclésiologie.
- Être motivé(e) pour la recherche universitaire, faire preuve de créativité et de rigueur scientifiques, avoir de bonnes capacités à travailler de façon autonome et en équipe.
- Faire preuve d’un bon niveau de français, d’un niveau de connaissance d’anglais et si possible d’allemand permettant de comprendre des textes ; une connaissance minimale de l’italien est un atout supplémentaire.

Conditions particulières :
- La recherche sera obligatoirement valorisée par la présentation d’une thèse de doctorat soutenue en Faculté de théologie (UCL), au terme du mandat.

»Vertrauen verstehen. Grundlagen, Formen und Grenzen des Vertrauens«

Das interdisziplinäre angelegte SNF-Projekt »Vertrauen verstehen. Grundlagen, Formen und Grenzen des Vertrauens« startet am 1. September 2009 seine 3-jährige Realisierungsphase. In diesem Rahmen werden Stellen aus den Bereichen Religionssoziologie, Geschichtswis-senschaft, Neurobiologie/Verhaltenswissenschaft und Theologie (Systematische Theologie/Hermeneutik) vergeben. Auf folgende zwei Stellen aus dem Bereich der Systematischen Theologie machen wir Sie gerne aufmerksam (Bewerbungsfrist: 17. Juli 2009). Junge Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen – sowohl Doktoranden als auch Habilitanden – aus dem Bereich der Systematischen Theologie werden eingeladen, sich zu bewerben. Die auf 3 Jahre befristeten Stellen eignen sich für die Erarbeitung von Qualifikationsarbeiten für die Promotion bzw. die Habilitation. Vorausgesetzt werden überdurchschnittliche Leistungsausweise sowie die Bereitschaft, sich an einem intensiven interdisziplinären Diskurs kritisch und produktiv zu beteiligen. • Religion et politique dans les sociétés sécularisées, 17-18 septembre 2009 – Université Catholique de Lille (France): La modernité a modifié ces réalités que nous appelons aujourd'hui « religion » et « politique » ainsi que leurs rapports. La laïcité de l’Etat, qui se fonde sur le principe de séparation entre les deux domaines, n’a pas coupé pour autant toute relation entre eux. Le contexte actuel des sociétés sécularisées et de leur évolution invite à interroger de façon nouvelle nos façons de comprendre l’influence des convictions et pratiques religieuses dans le champ social et politique. Cette étude peut être une porte d’entrée pour réfléchir notamment sur le rapport que les croyants entretiennent avec leur propre identité. Le colloque associera chercheurs et experts de différentes disciplines pour croiser trois axes de réflexion : l’un, intitulé Situations en évolution, tracera l’évolution de plusieurs courants religieux dans leur rapport au politique. Un deuxième, intitulé Expériences et pratiques, montrera comment sur différents terrains le religieux interfère concrètement avec l’éthique, le juridique, le politique. Un troisième, intitulé Analyses et perspectives, proposera des éclairages innovants pour déplacer les concepts ou les cadres théoriques utilisés.

Facilitating this process of reimagining the study of religion and theology in the context of these social and theoretical changes is the aim of the aforementioned conference.
  The conference will also function as the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Society for Theory of Religion and Theology, whose purpose is not to replicate the work of learned societies for the study of religion, nor that of theological societies, but to foster reflection on the connection between the two, exploring the interface between theory of religion and the study and practice of theology, conceiving of the implications for theological studies if done within a wider framework of theorizing about religion (as the encompassing theoretical ‘language’ of which theology is the ‘dialect’).

• Claiming Conceptual Space. Reimagining the Study of Religion and Theology: Changing Contexts and Social Discourses, a conference on theory of religion and theology: 6-9 April 2010 – Huguenot College, Wellington, South Africa: The study of religion and theology increasingly takes place in conceptual contexts of interdisciplinarity, and furthermore has not escaped recent developments in the field of methodology. Added to that, is the changed institutional location of the study of religion and theology in many institutions of higher learning, where religion and theology are studied in the context of the human sciences. It is clear that the way in which research in religion and theology is conceptualized, has of necessity to be reconfigured to account for these developments. Facilitating this process of reimagining the study of religion and theology in the context of these social and theoretical changes is the aim of the aforementioned conference.
  >> Proposals for papers are invited to address the issues announced in the conference call. Papers that explore the intersection between religion, theology, and other theoretical domains are particularly invited, as well as papers that reflect on theorize changed disciplinary practices and their institutionalization in research regimes and scholarly discourses. While related papers are also encouraged, contributions exploring the following themes are particularly invited: (1) Conceptuality and construction: the proprium of ‘religious discourse’ and the nature of ‘theology’; (2) Technologies of transcendental discourses: the politics of religion, identity, and memorialisation; (3) Reimagining disciplinary practices: testing the boundaries – intra-, inter-, and transdisciplinarity; and (4) Conceptualizing from a place: contextualization, relevance, and practices. Proposals should be about 300 words, clearly indicating the title, proposer, institutional affiliation, plus 5 to 8 key words, as well as indicate clearly which aspect of the conference theme the proposed paper will address or explore. Jean-Luc Blaquart et Bernard Bourdin (dir.), « Théologie et politique : une relation ambivalente. Origine et actualisation d’un problème », éd. L’Harmattan 2009
Sous ce titre viennent d’être publiés les actes du colloque qui s’est tenu à l’Université Catholique de Lille (France) le 19 janvier 2008 et qui avait été intitulé « Une théologie politique est-elle légitime ? Il s’agissait de comprendre et d’apprécier la position du théologien allemand Erik Peterson dans le contexte de l’Allemagne des années Trente. Son célèbre ouvrage Le monothéisme : un problème politique (désormais disponible en traduction française sous le titre depuis sa parution aux Editions Bayard en 2007) affirmait que monothéisme – c'est-à-dire la conception d’un Dieu unique – menait naturellement à une monarchie, au pouvoir d’un seul sur la société. Il soutenait que la foi chrétienne et sa confession trinitaire lui paraissaient au contraire de nature à briser ce lien entre autorité divine et pouvoir politique. La question principale est donc de savoir s’il faut comprendre son attitude comme une réserve vis-à-vis de tout engagement politique, ou bien comme une capacité de résistance contre le danger totalitaire d’un pouvoir absolu. Ici l’enquête historique conduit à une interrogation proprement théologique dont l’actualité demeure plus que jamais et dont un prochain colloque organisé par l’Université Catholique de Lille les 17 et 18 septembre 2009 permettra d’aborder quelques enjeux.

How long is eternity? What does the bible have to say about spacetime? This book, Spacetime and Theology in Dialogue explores the new way of seeing time and space (spacetime) and how that vision might raise questions for contemporary theology. The author takes us on a journey through philosophy, psychology and anthropology before proposing process theology as a useful way to come to grips with this new concept, spacetime. He suggests a theology of spacetime would need to be trinitarian, incarnational, biblical, liturgical and sacramental as well as open to synchronicity and mystery.

This is the presentation in book form of fifty-nine weekly commentaries on opening prayers by Daniel McCarthy OSB in The Tablet of London together with five hermeneutical exercises in homily form by Daniel McCarthy OSB and James Leachman OSB. The book contains a preface by Bishop John Flack, formerly Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome (2004-2008) and a foreword by Canon Alan Griffiths, professor of liturgy at Wonersh College in Surrey. There is an introduction "Valuing the Opening Prayer", an explanation of the "Literary genre of an opening prayer" together with photographs and explanations of the monumental stones of the ambo in the basilica of Sancta Sabina, Rome.
