The Master's
Health care professionals and those who are professionally interested in medical ethics find themselves increasingly confronted with moral questions and dilemmas. These complex issues challenge them on a daily basis. They require careful study and well-considered judgement, as well as rigorous questioning and thorough debate.

Study programme
The courses are spread over the three participating universities. In October, November and December the students will be in Leuven (Belgium), in January, February and March the students reside in Nijmegen (The Netherlands), in April, May and June the students will follow courses in Padova (Italy). The participating universities guarantee the awarding of a recognized joint degree after successful termination of the programme.
The courses consist of a series of lectures, allowing ample time for questions and discussions. Sessions will be devoted to small in-depth discussion groups on real-life cases and relevant contemporary issues. A major part of the programme is linked to research activities. At the end of the programme participants are expected to write a publishable paper on their topic of research and to present the results of their research to their colleagues.

Assets
Nowadays the study of ethics is part of the curriculum of most European Health Care training programmes. However, until now a concentration of such initiatives was lacking. The Master of Bioethics meets that need. For the first time several eminent European universities and institutes have combined their efforts in the field of bioethics by developing a one year or two year master's programme that focuses on all issues currently relevant to bioethics.
Career prospects
The professional career after a master in bioethics can be very diverse. Many graduates return to their workplace with a better understanding of the ethical issues. Some serve on institutional review boards, clinical ethics committees or find positions at government agencies, regulatory bodies and medical associations. Others are employed as professors at universities or researchers at independent research institutes. Some graduates finally find themselves working as clinical ethicists at hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
