The Master's
The programme was launched in 1990, modelled on programmes offered at law schools in the United States. The Leuven LL.M. continues the tradition of enabling you to study alongside an international body of students drawn to Leuven via Erasmus and other exchange agreements, thus expanding the international exposure already offered in the LL.M. However, the LL.M. also offers you courses, tutorials and clinics organised exclusively for the tightly knit group of LL.M. students.
There is no hiding the fact that European law is an important focus of the programme. Leuven lies in the shadows of the EU institutions and taps into a large network of professionals with daily exposure to and experience in the European institutions, including the European Commission, the European Council and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Indeed, we are proud to count the first permanent President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, among the alumni of our Faculty of Law.
My profile
Applicants have obtained a law degree. They can think critically about the nature and purpose of rules, they have the analytical skills needed to assess factual situations and have a general understanding of the operation of law in society. Students are expected to show an interest in being taught in an international environment, and to engage in guided self-study and research.

Assets
With some 4,200 students and a complete curriculum, the Faculty of Law at KU Leuven is the oldest and the largest in the country and has a long tradition of public service. Many of its alumni hold prominent positions in federal and regional government and in the European and international community. The Faculty of Law's research activities have a European, international and comparative orientation. Its staff members have a tradition of publishing authoritative articles in various languages in a number of European and international journals.
Optional focus on EU-China relations
The InBev-Baillet Latour Chair of European Union-China Relations, within the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies at KU Leuven, stimulates interdisciplinary research and education in the field of EU-China relations. The three courses offered in this optional specialisation are taught in different faculties (Law, Social Sciences and Economics) but they all belong to the category of elective courses for the LL.M. programme. They consist of a series of lectures from European and Chinese academics and cover both private and public legal aspects of the issues discussed.
Excursions
Every year, the programme organises visits to the most important European and international institutions, including the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and the Court of Justice in Luxembourg. All of the visits take place during the academic year before the Easter holidays and do not involve any extra cost to LL.M. students.
Career prospects
Masters of Laws from Leuven are active in a wide variety of European and International institutions and other governmental bodies, companies and last but not least (often international) law firms.
