The Master's
The Master of Engineering in Energy teaches you to focus on technological possibilities, without, however, losing sight of the environmental and socio-economic aspects of the field you are working in. The programme has an international scope and, it collaborates with partner universities excelling in the energy domain.
The Master of Engineering: Energy is a two-year programme at KU Leuven, which can be taken either in Dutch or in English.
The first year comprises electrical and mechanical engineering courses, as well as more general socio-economic energy-related subjects and an integrated project. In the second year, you continue your specialisation by, among other things, writing a Master’s thesis on a subject related to electrical energy, thermo-mechanical energy or more general technical-economic aspects. You may also participate in an international exchange or do an internship.
This Master’s programme is new and will be offered for the first time in the 2011-2012 academic year.
My profile
The programme is based on the first part of the Bachelor of Engineering, which offers general education in the basic sciences (mathematics-physics-chemistry) in combination with a number of carefully selected basic technical courses. Of these courses, the applied physics courses (electricity/magnetism, mechanics, thermodynamics) are seen as an absolute minimum. This is followed by the second part of the Bachelor’s, in which the basic theoretical knowledge of electrotechnology and mechanical engineering is based on the basic scientific and technical knowledge of the first part.
The internal foundations of this knowledge are system theory (and control theory), electrical energy (and drives), energy conversion machines and systems, fluid mechanics and heat transition (or transport phenomena). These courses are the core of a possible adjustment programme. To gather designing experience, the students have to become acquainted with the different domains in a shared project designing different basic components of an entire system. The different aspects of the basic courses will be treated here in a practical form.
