Leuven is situated on the important Oostende-Brussels-Leuven-Liège-Cologne axis and is located near the junction of two important motorways: E 40 and E 314.
The car in Leuven
Cars are not a convenient mode of transport in the centre of Leuven. Due to many one-way roads, driving is slow and difficult. Within Leuven, walking and cycling are the easiest, cheapest and most convenient ways to travel. Leuven and it’s suburbs are very accessible by bus.
Our advice is to keep your car out of the city.
Parking your car
The city authorities are making an effort to reduce automobile traffic in the centre of Leuven. One thing is clear: it is not easy to find a parking place. In order to make optimal use of the existing parking places, the city has introduced time restrictions which are enforced by means of parking machines and blue-zone rules. Exceptions are only made for the inhabitants of the relevant areas and disabled persons. Visitors are advised to use the public car parks or private garages. There are no free parking places in the centre of Leuven.
There are also P+Bus car parks. If you use the car park of ‘De Bond’ or ‘Heilig Hart’, you can take the bus to the city centre and back free of charge.
KU Leuven parking policy
Due to increasing parking problems for staff members in Leuven and Heverlee, the university has developed a parking policy in line with the KU Leuven Mobility Plan.
Taxis
Taxis can be found at the Leuven train station (in front of the main building) and at Smoldersplein (near the courthouse).
