Perspectives on fraud in financial institutions

This afternoon workshop sheds light on multiple dimensions of fraud: the academic research, the analytics, the regulatory framework as well as fraud investigations.

Venue: HOGC 02.28 (aula J. Van Der Eecken), Faculty of Economics and Business, Naamsestraat 69, 3000 Leuven

Program: the workshop starts at 2 pm with two keynote lectures. After a coffee break we will continue with two more keynotes. A networking reception is offered to all participants. See our webpage for a detailed program.

The speakers:

Prof. dr. Roger Laeven is Full Professor (Chair of Risk and Insurance) at the Department of Quantitative Economics, University of Amsterdam, since 2011. From 2007-date he is a visiting research fellow at Princeton University, Bendheim Center for Finance, and since 2016-date a part time professor in risk management at KU Leuven. Roger is a selected academic member of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), Insurance and Reinsurance Stakeholder Group (IRSG).

Mr. Peter Temminck (CFE, RFA) is a Certified Fraud Examiner, Registered Fraud Auditor and Investigator at the Corporate Security & Investigations department at NN Group (Nationale Nederlanden). He investigates internal incidents for all business units within NN Group globally. He has more than 15 years of investigative and anti-fraud experience and has worked at several financial institutions. In addition to this, Peter worked for the Economic Investigative Services (FIOD-ECD), specialised in economic crimes. He was one of the speakers in London and Nashville for the 2017 ACFE European and Global Fraud Conferences.

Mr. Erik Valgaeren is partner at the Law office Stibbe in Brussels. He advises a broad spectrum of clients from high-profile businesses to financial institutions. His practice focuses on IT, internet, data protection law, e-commerce and electronic communications law. Erik also deals with intellectual property issues relating to these areas driven by the increasing interaction between infrastructure and the content/information communicated. He regularly advises on a range of projects including web and cloud services, outsourcing, IT security, system integration, software implementation, information management, databases, health IT, privacy, consortia and partnerships. Erik is an officer and former chair of the Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA). He was admitted to the New York bar in 1992.

Dr. Véronique Van Vlasselaer graduated in 2015 with a PhD in Business Economics from KU Leuven, supervised by prof. dr. Bart Baesens. Her research is oriented towards the development of fraud detection frameworks and solutions from a data science perspective. She published (among others) in Management Science and is co-author of the book “Fraud Analytics Using Descriptive, Predictive, and Social Network Techniques: A Guide to Data Science for Fraud Detection” (published by Wiley). Since November 2015, Véronique has started as an Analytical Consultant at SAS with a strong interest in Data Analysis, Data Mining and Social Network Analysis.

Transportation: the Faculty of Economics and Business is located within walking distance of both the Leuven railway station and the Q-Park Heilig Hart (Naamsestraat 102).

The workshop is a joint initiative of the Insurance research group, the section of Statistics, the institute for Insurance Law and the research centre for Management Informatics.
