Short-stay visa (type C)

EEA nationals and Swiss nationals do not need a visa to enter Belgium.

A short-stay visa (type C) allows the holder to travel and stay freely between all of the Schengen area member countries. This visa, also known as the Schengen visa, is only applicable to a short stay of maximum 90 days (in any 180-day period). In order to determine the remaining days of authorised stay you have in the Schengen area, please use the official calculator.

Students, staff members and visitors who hold a residence card issued by another Schengen country, which is valid until after their return to their country of residence/home country, may enter and stay in Belgium without a visa for maximum 90 days (in any 180-day period).

Important information

On 12 October 2025, the Entry/Exit System (EES) started operations in Europe. The EES is an automated IT system that registers travellers from third countries whenever they enter or exit the EU at an external border with a short-stay visa or travel visa-free using their passport.

Non-EEA nationals coming to KU Leuven for a short stay of less than 90 days will be required to complete this registration.
