The Oscar and Jacques Peters Fund was established in 1986 following the award of the prestigious Georg Schlesinger Preis of the Senate of union state Berlin to Professor Jacques Péters. With the proceeds of this fund, the triennial Oscar and Jacques Péters Prize was awarded to authors of a meritorious scientific work or to postdoc fellowships or a project in the Global South. To date, the prize has already been awarded to a dozen laureates.
In his will, em. Prof. Jacques Péters, who died in December 2018 at the age of 95, left a significant bequest to KU Leuven for the benefit of the fund. With these wider resources, the fund's management committee aims to give the prize a greater international profile by awarding two prizes:
1. The International O&J Péters Prize.
The Prize is awarded triennially to one or more individuals for a meritorious scientific or technological contribution, with positive impact on society, in the broad field of mechanical production techniques.
2. The O&J Péters Grant for Development Cooperation
The "O&J Péters Grant for Development Cooperation" are scholarships or grants awarded triennially to one or more application files from one of the following categories:
- Category 1. A postdoc grant for a stay at KU Leuven, of a researcher from a university institution in the Global South.
- Category 2. Financial support for a teaching or research project carried out in the Global South with support from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, KU Leuven.
- Category 3. Starting grant to a young academic in the Global South, with PhD from KU Leuven, to start his/her academic career at an academic engineering school in the Global South.
"The significance of Professors Oscar and son Jacques Péters for the field of mechanical manufacturing techniques, which they elevated to a scientific discipline, can hardly be overestimated. By awarding The International O&J Péters Prize and the O&J Péters Grant for Development Cooperation, the O&J Péters Fund aims to keep their memory alive internationally."
