Research
From patients to the lab and back
The LKI conducts pioneering cancer research by combining the forces of KU Leuven, UZ Leuven and VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology.
The patient and its tumor are central in our research cycle. The range of activities is very broad: from fundamental research into the pathological mechanisms of cancer to translational research into new methods for diagnosis and treatment, and clinical studies in patients. With this approach, we aim for better prevention, faster detection, and more targeted treatment.

Specific research topics
Here you will find an overview of the various research topics at the LKI.

Clinical trials
At UZ Leuven, groundbreaking clinical research is being carried out. Many of our oncologists and specialists are pioneers in their field. Moreover, the location of the university hospital and the research building on the same campus results in intense collaborations that facilitate the transition from research to clinical applications.

Focus groups
One of the main goals of the LKI is to make cancer research more efficient. This is achieved within focus groups, which are consortia of clinical services of UZ Leuven and research laboratories of KU Leuven that focus on one specific topic, ranging from a specific cancer type to overarching subjects such as tumor immunology or imaging.

Laboratories
The laboratories are the cornerstone of the Leuven cancer research. Each of them focuses on a specific theme and together they cover almost the entire oncologic scene. Many of these research groups are pioneers in the international context.

Partnerships
To further drive our innovative research, accelerate the development of novel cancer therapies and enable us to provide the best possible clinical care, we are an active player in several (inter)national networks and partnerships.
