As a result, chemical processes towards these molecules have a non-negligible impact on the environment. Classic procedures rely almost solely on the exploitation of finite fossil feedstocks. Moreover, some of these processes display significant shortcomings. In the context of a progressively more eco-conscious society, the shift towards sustainable production of fuels, chemicals and energy becomes increasingly important. This doctoral manuscript focusses on the sustainable catalytic transformation of two promising groups of molecules, namely phenols and isohexides, which can be obtained from renewable sources such as lignocellulosic biomass. First, the direct liquid-phase phenol amination with ammonia or amines towards anilines and cyclohexylamines is presented using heterogeneous catalysts based on supported noble and even non-noble metals. The influence of key parameters was elucidated which resulted in fair to high yields of the desired amine products at optimized reaction conditions. The reaction mechanism towards these products are discussed, and some important properties of the catalyst are examined. Lastly, the oxidation of isosorbide, a sugar-derived molecule, through mediated electrooxidation is presented. The resulting product can be transformed via imination and subsequent reduction into diamines for the polymer industry.
